Abstract


Critical Review school was dramatic in the history of Chinese literature. Its cultural idea was once criticized during the period of the New Culture Movement. Because of claiming to flourish the quintessence of Chinese culture, Critical Review school had been subjected to Reactionary conservative. Until the1970s to1980s, Critical Review school had been re-examined by the academic circles about what was left in the New Culture Movement. At the same time, it was began to treat fairly.The aim of Critical Review school was’advocating adhering to the quintessence of classical Chinese culture’,’absorbing new knowledge’,’probing into academic’and it was practice. Fristly, the cultural practice of Critical Review school was displayed by ’advocating adhering to the quintessence of classical Chinese culture’. It was explained from four aspects which were carrying forward the literature and art, maintaining ethics,advocating education,saving the judgments. At the same time, It made us understand that the essence of traditional culture was eliminated through the history of screening surviving literature and art, ethics, Moral Education, institutions, etc. They had a permanent vitality and value and was worthy of preservation and promotion of the quintessence of China. Secondly, the cultural practices of Critical Review school was ’absorbing new knowledge’. It was performed from three points which were the fusion of Western classical, through the democratic ideas, the introduction of science and technology. Critical Review school was not only to promote the traditional quintessence of China and conservative cultural, but also it pointed out the useful things in Western culture was the positive significance on our culture supplement from the historical perspective. The ’probing into academic’ of Critical Review school mainly displayed in three perspectives. It was completing the information of insight into objects,a comparative study of Chinese and western culture,imitating and creating the good of the western culture. The Chinese and Western cultures was treated differently, extracted, and finally achieved the purpose of innovation. Then the quintessence of China was better carried forward and the national spirit was promoted.Critical Review school made our culture has a new look, the appeal of the times and the World cultural significance by advocating adhering to the quintessence of classical Chinese culture and absorbing new knowledge. It was an academic tradition of ancient Chinese. It was also a development and innovation. Its affection could not be ignored in the development process that Chinese academic tradition was from the ancient to the modern. Therefore, the academic thought of Critical Review school occupies an important position in the academic history in China.
