Analysis on the Current Situation of Chinese Language Teaching in Thailand’s Ubon Ratchathani University

Abstract


Under the influence of China’s growing national power and its leadership in world affairs continuously strengthening, the discipline of teaching Chinese language overseas is developing fast as the wave of“Chinese fever”continues to heat up. In Thailand’s Ubon Ratchathani University, degrees in Chinese language were introduced in 2005, and since then it has been continuously growing in size and importance.The purpose of the current paper is to perform an analysis on the present condition of the Chinese language curriculum at Ubon Ratchathani University. This analysis will include two different methods of investigation and two different targets of the survey. The targets are divided, on one side, of a group of eight Chinese language instructors, and, on the other side, a group of 100 undergraduate students currently enrolled in the Chinese language courses. For each of the two different targets, a proper methodology of research has been used; in the case of the Chinese language teachers, the author has given an interview, and for the students, the author distributed a questionnaire. Information from the questionnaire has been analyzed and summarized using the Rating Scale mathematical procedure. The analysis discovered some problems in the present conditions of the new Chinese language curriculum.This research found that there are five problems related to the Chinese language curriculum: 1. a lack of qualified Chinese language teachers, 2. the standard Chinese language program is not suitable to the needs of the students and has no continuity, 3. the quality of teaching materials does not comply with the University’s expected quality, 4. insufficient funds, 5. The level of Chinese language students in the same class is not uniform. The research has also found that there is a disproportion between male and female students who have chosen to learn Chinese, being the proportion of female students who choose to learn Chinese 76.9% higher than that of male students. The reasons for students to choose learning Chinese language, in order of importance, are being fond of learning Chinese stands at 54.6%; parental support and bigger chances of finding a job after graduation stands at 12.3%. Chinese language teaching courses most satisfies the students in the following aspects: first, they can communicate with the Chinese teachers in Chinese, followed by being able to ask the teachers for advice outside of the classroom, while at the same time they are able to obtain more materials and knowledge from other places.Corresponding conclusions to the problems found in Ubon Ratchathani University’s current situation on Chinese language teaching are drawn out; one such conclusion being that these issues cannot be resolved within a short period of time. And, these issues affect Ubon Ratchathani University on the expansion and popularization of Chinese learning. Therefore, there is a strong need to improve all different aspects of Chinese language teaching immediately. Improving and developing the standards and efficiency of Chinese language teaching in Thailand can be attained only with the support of the Thai Ministry of Education, the inter-cooperation of all different organizations of education, a positive attitude from schools and related organizations. It is the hope of the author to succeed in providing a foundation reference for the teaching of Chinese language in Thailand.
