Abstract


The term "secondary world" is initially defined as being an illusionary world that is parallel to the primary world (real world of readers), of independent trueness and full of reflections and resounders of the primary world. The new concept "fantasy world" comes directly out of it in 20th century. Since the early 20th century, all artistic forms have been involved in the creative writing of fantasy world works. It can be seen after reviewing the development of the fantasy world in 20th century that the coming of the core concept "secondary world" is the cause of sudden blowout of fantasy world works. Originated from the definition by John Tolkien in early 20th century, The concept "secondary world" has gained worldwide acceptance now and come in many different derivative definitions. Meanwhile, secondary world-based creations gradually go from the single story-text-picture province to many other areas. Though generated in 20th century, the secondary world had in fact already existed in early myths and legends of many nations as a carrier or an artistic form in the eyes of readers; some of these myths and legends, like the Classic of Mountains and Seas, are very much like what is now the secondary world fantasy works. Theoretical studies on the secondary world are also flourish. Some theories did not start from the perspective of the secondary world when presenting an argument, but they really serve to verify and supplement many characteristics with the secondary world; some discussions on the ontology of secondary world, on the other hand, are also making continuous evolution with the birth and development of the secondary world. Through a comprehensive survey on different aspects of the secondary, we not only can summarize the core meaning of the fantasy literature and fantasy world, but also view literature in a different light, explain relationship between man and world, find the world of literature and think of the in-depth meaning of the world for human being.
