Abstract


Prominent disciplines in higher education institutions are the important carriers for core competence, distinguished brands and the foundation of sustainable development. The sustainable development of prominent disciplines in key agricultural universities has been playing a significant theoretical and practical role in cultivating agricultural sci-tech talents, innovating and applying agricultural science and technology, and improving both core competence and international influence.The research takes the prominent disciplines in key agricultural universities as the subject, aiming to analyzing the status quo, problems and causes of the development of prominent disciplines in key agricultural universities. Based on the theories of system theory and sustainable development, the research adopts research the methodologies of literature study and interview. In the research, the author analyses the characteristics, experience and inspirations of the development of prominent disciplines in three key agricultural universities, taking biomedical science in American Connell University, animal genetics, breeding and reproduction science in China Agricultural University and Huazhong Agricultural University as examples.In reference to the experience of developing prominent disciplines in foreign universities, regarding the present problems of the sustainable development of prominent disciplines in key agricultural universities’ in China, and according to the characteristics and principles of developing prominent disciplines in key agricultural universities, the research proposes several paths and suggestions to developing prominent disciplines. Namely, build distinctive research fields and directions, improving the strength and level of academic team, strengthen the construction of discipline platform, enhance the international level, and strengthen the capacity of the service to agriculture, rural areas and farmers, as well as the community, cultivating sustainable disciplinary culture, formulating scientific and reasonable strategic planning for prominent disciplines, multiplying the channels for raising funds, innovating the managing system of prominent principles.The research presents several innovating opinions on the sustainable development path to prominent disciplines, and it also conducts consultative interviews with experts. Limited by time and the research ability of the author, more profound empirical studies need to be done, referring to the present development of prominent disciplines in key agricultural universities home and abroad.
