Passive optical network (PON) is recognized as one of the most promising solution forthe first mile. Many network architectures are proposed to extend access capacity anddistance, with the rapid growth of the bandwidth demands. This dissertation launched theresearch of the application of all-optical wavelength conversion and linear opticalamplification based on gain-clamped semiconductor optical amplifier, for the needs of nextgeneration passive optical network. The main contents of this dissertation are as thefollowing:A novel gain-clamped wavelength converter (GCWC) based on fiber-Bragg-gratingexternal-cavity structure is proposed. Structure and operation principle are summarized andanalyzed, and theoretical model based on the rate equation is established. The effects ofstructural parameters and working conditions to frequency response, converted waveform,extinction ratio and overshoot of GCWC are studied and analyzed using the method ofsimulation and experiment, and further experimental results show that GCWC has at least10dB input power dynamic range. On the basis, a hybrid TDM/WDM passive opticalnetwork (HPON) architecture based on GCWC is proposed and the performance is tested.The results show that GCWC ensures colorless ONU with more than25nm wavelengthconversion range, achieves all-optical power equalization with at least5dB dynamic range,and is transparent for the bit rate and network protocol. And HPON system have a total reachof60km, and the total user number of256×16.A gain-clamped linear optical amplifier (GCLOA) based on ring cavity structure isproposed. Structure and operation principle are analyzed, and simulation experiments aresetup to help us analyze the frequency response, gain and noise of GCLOA. A simulationsystem architecture, which demonstrates simultaneous amplification of WDM upstreamsignals using GCLOA, is analyzed. The results show that sensitivity penalty caused bysimultaneous amplification using GCLOA could be ignored. Compare with normal SOA,GCLOA has the characteristics of higher saturation input/output power, lower crosstalkbetween channels.
