Abstract

The wireless communication systems of the future are envisioned to integrate multiplewireless access technologies to provide high-speed communication services to mobile users in aseamless manner. Radio resource management is needed to improve system performance, so itskey technologies should be solved firstly in the heterogeneous networks. This thesis presents a two-tier call admission control (CAC) architecture in a heterogeneouswireless network. The proposed CAC architecture is based on the call-level and packet-levelQoS considerations at both the wireless and wired parts of the network.A performance analysismodel for an example CAC scheme based on this architecture is outlined, and typical numericalresults are presented. This thesis provides a comprehensive survey of the issues related to pricing in aheterogeneous wireless network consisting of WiMax and WLAN and possible approaches to thesolution of the pricing problem. Each of the wireless access networks is assumed to support twotypes of connections, namely, premium and best-effort connections. This thesis first considers thecase where the prices are offered to the users at the same time (i.e., a simultaneous-play game).Nash equilibrium is considered as the solution of this game. Afterwards, this thesis considers thecase where a service provider can offer its price before other providers. This is referred to as aleader-follower game for which Stackelberg equilibrium is considered as the solution. Then thispricing approach is expanded to a heterogeneous wireless network consisting of WiMax, cellularand WLAN. This thesis presents a cooperative pricing model which maximizes the total revenueof the service provider and a method for revenue sharing.
