National spirit refers to the common qualities developed through a long history including national consciousness, national cultures, national customs, national characters, national believes, national religions and national values, etc. In national culture, national spirit education is an essential element in maintaining, coordinating, guiding and pushing forward the survival and development of a nation. It epitomizes national vitality, creativity and cohesiveness. It is the basis for a nation to survive, live and develop together. The former Party general secretary Jiang Zemin mentioned in the report to the 16th session of CPC:"Nationalism is the basis for a nation to survive and develop." Institutes of higher education, as an important part of national education, must strengthen university students’national spirit education in order to foster their national spirit, cultivate their national identity, which will play an important and realistic role in the national revival in the new century.Over the recent years, while the education community has paid special attention to national spirit education, patiently studied its significance, contents, problems and countermeasures, etc., university students, as a special group, is not their study focus. This project based on questionnaire survey, practice and first hand information, taking students of Binzhou Medical University as an example, is intended to explore an effective way to foster university students’national spirit, thereby to enhance their comprehensive quality.This paper is guided by Maxims education theory, applying methods of theory and practice, history and logistics, quantitative analysis and qualitative analysis. It thoroughly analyzes and illustrates the status quo, existing problems and countermeasures in national spirit education in institutes of higher education.This paper develops in five parts, part one illustrates the importance of national spirit education for university students and the significance of the study. Part two illustrates the questionnaire survey and the sample statistics. Part three analyzes the sample statistics in four aspects respectively. Part four is about the survey findings and the problems in national spirit education. Part five draws a conclusion based on elaborate analysis and suggests corresponding measures on how to strengthen national spirit education for university students. National spirit education for university students is a long and complex process, in which we must attach importance to university students’socialism core values construction, supply organic support, let universities play the role of comprehensive education, take national spirit cultivation as an important internal core, give the main role of education to ideological and political classes, develop a campus culture to carry forward traditional virtues and reflect the spirit of times. We should also organize colorful voluntary services and social practice projects, build a positive and healthy network, and encourage students to read classics to promote spirit education.
