Abstract


Since China’s first money market funds launch, the money market funds has experienced initial fast development. To the end of2008, the total size of money market funds had climbed to390billion. But after2009, the development became stagnant, hovering under200billion. However, in the meantime, T+0banking product available at the end of2007, as a "quasi-money market fund" has made great progress. Till second quarter of2011, total market size estimated at more than400billion. By the method of comparative study, this paper tries to find the answer to this phenomenon from the product itself.This paper summarizes the research literature of domestic and foreign money market funds, and introduces China’s money market funds and T+0banking product history and status of development, and meanwhile analyzes these two products differences in regulation and their impact. Through case studies and a combination of empirical research methods, the paper conducts comparative analysis between money market funds and T+0banking product in liquidity, risk and return these three aspects, and finds that investment option on these two types of products by investors has its own rationale. On this basis, the paper makes a summary of how to choose between these two types of cash management products, and proposes some recommendations on the healthy development of cash management financial products, that is to introduce similar money market funds regulation to regulate T+0banking product, strengthen the T+0banking product’s internal control and self discipline, rich variety of money market, improve the speed of money market fund liquidation, promote the construction of payment function of the two types of products and so on.
