Abstract

This thesis reports on continue-wave Tm:YAG ceramic lasers, tunable narrowbandTm:YAG ceramic laser using volume Bragg grating and passive Q-switched Tm-dopedfiber laser using single-wall carbon nanotubes. We demonstrate laser diode end-pumped continue-wave Tm:YAG ceramic laser. Amaximum output power of3W was obtained with respect to slope efficiency of23%. Q-switched and mode-locked Tm:YAGceramic laserwas also theoreticallydiscussed inthisthesis. In order to obtain tunable narrowband Tm:YAG ceramic laser, a reflective volumeBragg grating in PTR glass was introduced by replacing a mirror of resonator. The outputspectrum could be tuned from1937nm to1997nm (60nm) with linewidth of <0.9nmThe passive Q-switched single-mode rate equations was derived in terms of exper-imentally relevant parameters such as the laser power P(t), the intensity gain coefficientper cavity round trip g(t), and the intensity saturable loss coefficient per cavity round tripq(t). The condition for Q-switching was given by analyzing the stability of rate equations. Finally the mode-beating of Q-switched lasers was also discussed.A passive Q-switched Tm-doped fiber laser was reported using single-wall carbonnanotubes(SWCNT)-polyvinylalcohol(PVA)compositefilmassaturableabsorber(SA).An interactive large mode area on the SA was employed to avoid damage of the SWC-NT/PVA film and benefit pulsed laser operation. Stable pulses of85-164kHz repetitionrate were generated at1967nm with a maximum average output power of103mW. Thesingle pulse energy was up to~0.63μJ with~0.87μs pulse duration.
