Abstract


Learning motivation is both an important concept of educational psychology and a major proposition of the research on vocational education. Motivation is one of the most important emotional factors in foreign language learning. It is not only a dynamic factor to promote student’s learning activities, and a source of strength to encourage the learners, but also has a crucial impact on the whole process of English learning as well as the results. At present, the researches on English learning motivation are numerous, however, it is found that there has been insufficient in the correlative study of English learning motivation and learning proficiency, especially most studies are mainly done for undergraduate and middle school students, and there are only few referring to vocational colleges. With the increasing need of vocational technical personnel, vocational colleges have developed rapidly and it has become the important part of education, thus it is a practically significant for the research on English learning motivation of vocational college learners. Based on the previous researches on motivation, this paper focuses on discussing the characteristics of English learning motivation held by vocational college students and analyzing the relevant circumstances between learning motivation and learning proficiency.Correlative research methods are chosen in the paper and the investigation is conducted in Chengde Nursing Vocational College, randomly choosing 258 students from the graduating class where the major is foreign nursing. The questionnaire is the main approach and students’IELTS scores are collected. By using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS 13.0), the correlation analysis about the relationship between English learning motivation and learning proficiency is made in the thesis. Descriptive statistics, Independent-sample t-test, Pearson correlation analysis and regression analysis are adopted in the course of analysis. The results are as follows:1. Vocational college students hold very strong English learning motivation which is dominated by instrumental motivation, integrative motivation and achievement motivation.2. The group of high mark students has stronger integrative motivation, intrinsic motivation and achievement motivation, while the group of low mark students holds stronger extrinsic motivation.3. Integrative motivation, instrumental motivation, intrinsic motivation and achievement motivation are positively correlated with learning proficiency and extrinsic motivation has a significant negative correlation. In the regression analysis, extrinsic motivation, integrative motivation and instrumental motivation can predict English learning achievements effectively.Finally, three suggestions are proposed in the study for English teaching in vocational colleges.
