Abstract

In this thesis, we describe the synthesis of different sizes and different surfactantsprotected gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). We prepared amphiphilic AuNPs which wereprotected by polystyrene and polyethylene glycol polymer brushes through one-step andtwo-step “grafting to” reaction. This thesis studied the self-assembly of the amphiphilic AuNPs into one-dimensional(1D), two-dimensional (2D) and there-dimensional (3D) nanostructures using precipitationmethod. We described a general methodology for the solvent-induced self-assembly ofAuNPs into3D clusters with well-controlled sizes. The structures of the clusters werecharacterized by ultraviolet and visible spectrophotometer (UV-Vis) and transmissionelectron microscopy (TEM) as well as field emission scanning electron microscopy(FSEM).We prepared a Janus polymer particles by polystyrene (PS) and polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) through emulsion of the solution and studied the self-assembly ofthe amphiphilic AuNPs in the interface of the Janus polymer particle. Amphiphilic AuNPswith short PS chains loaded on the whole polymer particles, both on the PS domain andPMMA domain. Amphiphilic AuNPs were loaded in to the PS domain by increasing thechains of PS ligand grafted on AuNPs. The location of where amphiphilic AuNPs wereloaded changed from the surface to the inside of the Janus polymer particle by increasingthe chains of PS ligand grafted on AuNPs.
