β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) mainly contains seven glucose unit and like a hollow truncated cone. Cavity inside it is hydrophobic since the cavity is made up of two circle of hydrogen atoms and one circle of oxygen atoms of glycosidic bond, which have been shielded by C-H bonds; however, the outside of hydroxyl group is hydrophilic. β-CD has been widely used in the fields of agriculture, chemical industry and medicine, etc. Pentaerythritol (PER) is composed of aldehyde and formaldehyde via aldol condensation and is amyl quaternary alcohol with neopentyl structure. It containes polyhydroxy and is widely applied in polymer, coating, heat stabilizer, etc. Meanwhile, β-CD and PER are excellent raw materials for the synthesis of star polymers. Star polymers possess unique structure and have been widely used in the fields of industry, coating, flocculating agent, etc. Therefore, synthesis of new star polymer and the applications of new star polymer in flocculating agent have been paid more attention. In recent years, according to the theoretical research and the actual processing conditions of polymer flocculating materials in the world, it’s showed that the flocculation efficiency has a close relationship to the structure of the polymer. Therefore, star polymer with β-CD and PER as nuclear was designed to prepare in this paper. β-CD/PER have been firstly acidylated by2-Bromoisobutyryl bromide to synthesize initiator Br-β-CD/Br-PER. And then star polymers have been prepared via ATRP by using DMAEMA and AM as comonomers, Br-β-CD/Br-PER as macromolecular initiator, CuBr as catalytic and bpy as complexent. Star polymer prepared from AM and DMAEMA via ATRP has not been reported, which provide a new approach for the synthesis of star polymers. At the same time, this kind of star polymer is expected to apply in flocculation adsorption field and will get more meaningful results. The main research in this paper are as follows:1. Star polymer synthesized by Br-β-CD, Br-PER as initiator, bpy as complexing agent and CuBr as catalyst, under the common temperature and the same reaction time, at different molar ratio of AM and DMAEMA, different mole ratio of bpy and CuBr. The products were characterized by means of IR,1HNMR, TG, DSC and Zeta potential analysis. By testing the molecular weight of polymer, the result showed that the molecular weight of polymer increased with the mole ratio of DMAEMA and Br-β-CD/Br-PER increase when bpy and CuBr mole ratio was constant at80℃;While the molecular weight of polymer increased with the mole ratio of bpy and CuBr increase when DMAEMA and Br-β-CD/Br-PER mole ratio was constant.2. Star polymer was combined with alkali clay distribution to get modifier and a flocculating adsorbent which was applied in the following two system:(1) Removing the Cr6+in the solution, optimum process conditions of adsorption was determined by the experiment:a,0.1172g of modifier based on p-CD as nuclear,(concentration was0.2289g star polymer/g alkali clay) was added into Cr6+solution at pH from3to5for16h, and the adsorption rate of Cr6+was improved from15%to57%; b,0.1254g of modifier based on PER as nuclear(concentration was0.2451g star polymer/g alkali clay) was added into Cr6+solution at pH from3to5for20h, and the adsorption rate of Cr6+was increased from15%to52%;(2) Removing phenol in the solution, optimum process conditions of adsorption was determined by the experiment:a,0.1265g of modifier based on β-CD as nuclear (concentration was0.2178g star polymer/g alkali clay) was added into phenol solution at pH8for16h, and adsorption rate of phenol was58%; b,0.1361g of modifier based on PER as nuclear (concentration was0.2367g star polymer/g alkali clay) was added into phenol solution at pH8for20h, adsorption rate of phenol was52%.
