Abstract

Optical amplification devices have been widely used in modern opticalcommunication field. The improvement of gain properties, the integration of microchipdevices and low costs play a key role in the development of amplification devices andtechnology. So far, it is a widespread way that Utilizing rare earth doped novel materialsto achieve optical amplification devices. But the function of those devices is limited bythe properties and the size of materials. Among the most materials,Lanthanum-modified Lead Zirconate Titanate (PLZT) ceramics can accomplish theoptical gains and modulations simultaneously by the suitable pumping source andexternal electric field. Along this way, the integration of microchip and electro-circuitdevices can be fulfilled, which is a effective way to broaden the value of opticalamplification devices. The properties of Er3+/Yb3+co-doped PLZT ceramics have been studied based onit’s structure characteristics. Ferroelectric hysteresis loop and electro-optical coefficienthave been measured, which provided fundamental condition to utilize our materials todesign and manufacture the optical amplification devices.Get an in-depth understanding about the application perspective of our materials, transmittance, absorption and photoluminescence spectrum have been charactered. Theinfluences of external circumstance (the wavelength of pumping source and temperaturearound our sample) have been measured. The work above provided powerful support todesign and manufacture the optical amplification devices.Through all the measurement and analysis of the materials, we designed a kind ofdevices, which integrated into optical amplification, optical modulation and opticalswitch based on the original electro-optical modulation devices. The devices have beenestablished and simulated based on the experimental configurations and the functionsand performances of the devices have been measured. Those experiments andsimulations further proved this novel EO ceramic to possess tremendous potential valuein the application of multifunctional optical amplification facilities.
