Due to its excellent mechanical, physical and chemical properties,300M ultra-high-strength steel is widely used in the aviation field, especially in the aircraft landing gear andother bearing components. However, the characteristics of its high strength, high hardness, high toughness also lead to machining difficulties, such as the large cutting force, high cuttingtemperature, severe tool wear, and low processing efficiency in the cutting process. Therefore, researching the cutting process of300M steel, improving the processing efficiency, reducingprocessing costs, have became very necessary research projects. In this paper, combined withthe characteristics of the300M, the study focuses on the cutting force in the end milling. Thecontent consists of the following aspects:The research progress of300M steel is reviewed and the common milling forcemodeling methods are summarized. To establish the mechanical milling force model, orthogonal experimental design method is used in the300M steel end milling cutting tests tocalibrate cutting force coefficients. Considering the impact of machining parameters on themilling force, the cutting coefficients model is further established. Then the model is used topredict milling forces. The predicted and experimental values of the instantaneous millingforce on different cutting parameters combination are compared. After that, the size of theerror and the main reason are analyzed.Based on the mechanical model, considering the influence of the tool wear in the actualprocessing, a mechanical force model including the flank wear in end milling is founded. Themodel takes the width of flank wear as the measurement. The wear experiment has been doneusing the300M steel. The flank force coefficients are calibrated and then the flank forcecoefficients model is established where the influence of the cutting parameters are considered. The worn tool milling force is predicted by the established model. Comparing the forceobtained by the predictions and experiments, the accuracy of the model is verified. The finite element method is used for300M steel milling force. Based on the softwareAdvantEdge FEM, the three-dimensional FEM model is established and the error between the simulation and experiment is analyzed. By the AdvantEdge the2D milling modeling, theinfluence of cutting parameters on the cutting force is researched through the single factormethod. The above researches can provide the basis of the cutting force for the selection of300Msteel cutting parameters, and for the research of milling thermal process system stability, themachined surface quality, etc.
