Abstract

As high technology platform in modern warfare, helicopter gunship has become thebond of combined arms and an indispensable member in coalition warfare. With thedeveloping of military technology, the performance of helicopter gunship is also continuallyimproving; nevertheless the problem of weak protection capability has not been completelyresolved. Ceramic particles reinforced metal matrix functional gradient armor is a new type;also it’s a terrific protective material for helicopter gunship armor to gain light weight. In thispaper, ANSYS/LS—DYNA software is used to simulate the process of armor-piercingprojectile vertical penetrate and oblique penetrate ceramic particles reinforced metal matrixfunctional gradient armor. The main work and achievements are as follows:1) Classical methods of estimating elasticity coefficient of biphasic composite materialhave been collected, and the method suiting for ceramic particles reinforced metal matrixcomposite studied in this paper has been selected.2) Three types of functional gradient armor have been designed or selected, thedistributions of ceramic particle reinforcements in the composites are sigmoid, linear and twopower-law function. Then the material parameters needed are calculated. Based on theparameters obtained, the processes of armor-piercing projectile vertical penetrate ceramicparticles reinforced metal matrix functional gradient armor have been simulated. The resultsshow that increase the volume fraction of ceramic particles reinforcement and slow down thechange rate of ceramic particles reinforcement in the armor’s top surface and increase theductibility of the armor’s back surface will promote the anti-penetration performance of thefunctional gradient armor.3) In chapter4, the processes of armor-piercing projectile oblique penetrate the optimalceramic particles reinforced metal matrix functional gradient armor selected in chapter3havebeen simulated. The results show that: when the oblique angle is relatively small, theprojectile will turn to the vertical direction that is to say the oblique angle will diminishduring the oblique penetration, and this phenomenon will do harm to the anti-penetrationperformance of the armor; when the oblique angle increased to a certain degree, the obliqueangle will be enlarged during the oblique penetration, and this phenomenon will be beneficialto the anti-penetration performance of the armor. The bigger the oblique angle is, the easier the ricochet phenomenon will take place. When design armors, the oblique angle of0~15should be avoid, and the oblique angle of35~50are preferred.
