Abstract


The Modularity of Mind is written by Fodor, the American philosopher of mind and language philosopher, on 1983. A theory about the structure of mind is presented in this book. Fodor calls it the modularity of mind. The modularity of mind is an important theory in cognitive psychology. So far no historical research has been done on it. This article is to accomplish the task. This thesis attempts to review the theory and remark some debates on it in a historical view in order to clarify some misunderstandings about the theory.This thesis will first discuss the theoretical background of The Modularity of Mind. Then a reconstruction of the theory of modularity of mind will be done with the specific contents being expatiated on. The way of constructing the theory by Fodor will be analyzed based on the reconstruction. These viewpoints can provide a foundation for the following discussions. Next, the origins of the module theory and some divergences on the theory will be discussed:the faculty psychology, the new-Cartesianism, the functionalism of the nature of mind, the language of thought hypothesis, the computational theory of mind, these have influenced Fodor’s theory directly; Some divergences caused by Fodor’s theory are about the theory itself, such as whether the module is strictly informationally encapsulated. Also some are about philosophy, such as whether the module concept should be applied to the entire theory of the structure of mind and whether the module method can be used extensively. In the concluding section, according to these studies, the nature of the theory and the purpose of Fodor’s constructing the theory will be discussed. Finally, a tentative answer to the meaning of philosophical thought in cognitive science will be given according to Fodor’s contributions.
