The rivers and water conveyance canal are suffering different ice disaster in theice age around the world. And the ice jam and ice dam are the most dangerous. Theice jam and ice dam will decrease the water conveyance capacity, and endanger thesafety of water conveyance constructions. Even more, they are grave threats toeconomic development and people’s life and property safety. Ice submergence is thebasis of ice jam formation and development. So to control ice submergence hasimportant significance for the water conveyance project capability and safety. This paper performs fine numerical simulation about the pressure distributionbeneath a leading-edge round ice block and rectangle ice block in different modes. The relationships between pressure distribution and the leading-edge shape, the icesize or the velocity are researched. We calculate the ice submergence moment Muthrough the pressure beneath a floating ice bock, and then study the ice submergencecritical condition by moment balance method. While the physical model tests on icesubmergence was conducted. We research the relationship between ice submergencecritical condition and the leading-edge shape or ice size through the combination ofnumerical simulation and physical model tests, and finally we provide the judgmentcriterions on ice submergence. The main research achievements include:(1) By applying RNG k-turbulence model and VOF method, numericalsimulation was made to the pressure distribution beneath a leading-edge rectangle iceblock. The comparison between physical model experimental results and numericalsimulation results was conducted, and they are in good agreement, which proved thatthe simulation results are reasonable and reliable.(2) For further analysis of the effects of the leading-edge shape on the icesubmergence, fine numerical simulation was made to the pressure distribution beneatha leading-edge rectangle ice block and round ice block in different ice thickness orvelocity. The research found that the pressure distribution has relations with the iceleading-edge shape, ice size and velocity.(3) We calculate the ice submergence moment Muthrough the differentialpressure beneath a floating ice bock, and then study the ice submergence criticalcondition by moment analysis method. The research found that the ice submergence critical condition has relations with the ice leading-edge shape and ice size.(4) Relying on the ice engineering and ice force laboratory of Tianjin University,We conduct the physical model tests on natural broken ice submergence. We researchthe ice submergence critical condition through the combination of numericalsimulation and physical model tests. And finally we provide the judgment criterionson ice submergence based on the results of the numerical simulation and momentanalysis. Then we research ice submergence critical condition of the South-to-NorthWater Diversion project through the judgment criterions.
