Abstract


This paper presents a novel simple isolator, in which the unsaturated polyesterfiber-reinforced plastic plate is used to replace steel sheet within rubber bearing toproduce lightweight, cost-effective isolator for application to rural building.The selection of fiber-reinforced plastic plate, the performance test of the rubbersheet, and the choose of suitable glue as well as the molding process of bearings (coldbonding forming process and hot vulcanization molding process) are introduced inthis paper. A systematical experiment of the new type isolator is carried out toinvestigate its mechanical characteristics, including compression, shear, relativitybetween compression and shear, and ultimate properties of the simple isolator. Thecurve of limitation property of the new simple isolator is presented, and therefore thereasonable design area of the new isolator is advised. The simple isolation bearing issimulated by the finite element software ABAQUS, and analysis of the vertical andhorizontal properties have been down, which are compared with experimental results.The design method of rural isolated structure has been proposed according tothe number of bearings required for per unit construction area, which is determined bythe factors of structure type (dominated by masonry structure), width, depth, andfortification intensity. The method proposed above will make this novel simpleisolator used widely in rural buildings to reduce seismic responses.This simple seismic isolation technology is employed to a3-story masonrystructure, which is a typical demonstration building for earthquake protection in thecountryside. Finite element model of the building is developed in this paper. Theoptimal arrangement of the new isolators is designed and then nonlinear time-historyanalysis of the isolated structure is conducted. A connection construction scheme isput forward for low-rise rural building.This simple isolation technology provides scientific and technological supportfor popularizing seismic isolation technology in underdeveloped rural area, which isof theoretical and practical significances.
