Abstract


The Shipping News is the masterpiece of Annie Proulx, who is a famous female writer in modern America. The Shipping News has been interpreted from the perspectives of language and black comedy, the thesis attempts to disclose the significance of studying The Shipping News from the perspective of ecocriticism.The thesis is divided into five parts: Introduction gives a brief introduction of the novel, the author and the critical theory—ecocriticism, and then makes a critical review of The Shipping News. Chapter One aims at disclosing ecology crisis in modern society by respectively analyzing the nature, social and spiritual ecology embodied in the novel. Chapter Two by describing the harmonious relationship between people and nature, people and people, people and self, to show that in less developed Newfoundland, people can pass the ecology crisis by loving the nature. And the protagonist finds the ideal home here. Chapter Three adopts an ecofeminist approach to explore the unique relationship between women and nature represented in the novel, and women’s fight for identity in modern society. The last part is the conclusion part. In this part, the paper intends to give the conclusion that nature is the groundwork of a real life and a healthy mind. People should rebuild the connection with nature; lead a harmonious relationship with nature.
