Abstract


Tolkien’s epic The Lord of the Rings has drawn lots of attention since 1960s. Scholars home and abroad have given different comments on its connotation from different viewpoints and in different levels. The author of this thesis, based on the previous researches, tries to focus on Tolkien’s reflection on "modernity" in The Lord of the Rings. This thesis takes the definition, the characteristic and three phases of "modernity" as the first part and holds the view that the source of Tolkien’s reflection on "modernity" attributes to Tolkien’s experience of industrialization and war, idyllic childhood and benevolence enlightenment and his art personality persistent in linguistics, which is the second part of the thesis. In the third part, the thesis presents the magic world, the fantastic context and the dialectical thought Tolkien creates in The Lord of the Rings, which implies the universal love based on religion, the peace pursuit based on desire and the humanism ideal based on surreality, and gives the significance of Tolkien’s reflection on "modernity" in ideology, literature, aesthetics and acceptance.
