Abstract


Translation is a kind of language conversion, and the translator’s cognitivethinking activity as well. In cognitive linguistics,“language is grounded in generalcognition”, one of its most important idea is that: cognition of the real world is thebasis of cognition, cognition is the basis of language. There is a consequentlydeciding relation in “the real world---cognition---language”. Language is a windowof thoughts; cognition is a medium between the real world and language. The realworld influences language via cognition, language is result of cognition development,which in turn, sheds influences on cognition and the real world(王寅,2010:8).Translation is an activity of language conversion, and cognitive activity about thetranslator’s thoughts. Embodied cognition is human’s way of feeling world anddeveloping concepts, the study of language must take the process of developingconcepts into consideration to give explanation to the source of language.This essay analyzes image reproduction and how translator translates and thecauses of creative treason from cognitive perspective. As is pointed out, thetranslator’s embodied cognition is a key factor that affects image reproduction,concrete knowing of individual image and reasoning of holistic image. In imagereproduction with the help of cognitive scheme, individual image will vary from itsorigin in source text that its denotation becomes richer, or more acceptabletranslations compared with the source text, it’s a phenomenon we call creative treason.Literature translation is translator’s recreation based on source text. As Guo Moruoputs in On Creation “literature is almost the same as creation, good translation equalscreation, or more than creation, we need to be creative in literature translation.Therefore, reasonable “treason”, like creation, should be well-valued.Dong Shiliang(1988:85)points out, the intrinsic rules of translation lie in humanbeing’s thinking mechanism, the study of thinking mechanism will bring abreakthrough for the study of translation．Cognitive linguistics is dedicated to thestudy of the interaction between language and other cognitive competence, howlanguage forms on the basis of cognition, and cognitive mechanism behind language.It shows unique function and provides a new angle and way to unveil thinkingmethods and essence of translation and the study of translation theory and practice.
