Abstract


As a verb, adverb, or preposition, the word ‘in/at’ has different characteristics inthe aspects of syntax, semantics, and pragmatics due to different part of speech.Therefore, Japanese native speakers are prone to make mistakes in their studies. Inthis article, by using the starting point of the most common structure of ‘in/at’ as apreposition, namely ‘NP+in/at+place+VP’, the author aims to find out andsummarize the common and different points between the use of ‘in/at’as a prepositionin Chinese and that in Japanese on basis of the comparison with correspondingJapanese expressions related to ‘に’,‘で’, and other prepositions in terms of syntax,semantics, and pragmatics.After analysis, based on the reasons may affecting Japanese native speakers’study on ‘in/at+place’ and combined with the textbooks of Confucius Institute atOsaka Sangyo University (where the author worked as a practice teacher for one year),the author proposes appropriate teaching strategies according to the similarities anddifferences between Chinese and Japanese expressions related to the preposition ‘in/at,draws the conclusion, and confirms the further research direction in the future.
