Abstract


This is a report on translation of Robert Wolfe’s work----only page3to page17of Letting the Sun Shine in at the WTO: How Transparency Brings the TradingSystem to Life. The focus of the text is on transparency of WTO and the writer’srelated views. The study object is therefore an informative text. And due to thiscategorization, the translator here has applied a strategy based on “FunctionalEquivalence” Theory of Eugene A. Nida. In the translation process, culturalbackgrounds of both the author and target readers are taken into consideration, aswell as specialized knowledge concerned. With the core strategy of “FunctionalEquivalence”, the most effort is given to eliminating obstacles which target readersmay encounter for the purpose of gaining the most optimized result of transmittingsource information to target readers.In this report, page3to page17of Letting the Sun Shine in at the WTO: HowTransparency Brings the Trading System to Life is taken as the study object, in thetranslation process of which, problems have been found, and possible solutionsbased on “Functional Equivalence” have been raised, too. By further analysis italso provides reliable experience and practical methods in how to translate texts ofits kind.The report can be divided into four parts:First part, introduction part; this part is a lead-in for the source text about itsstructure, background, demand and target for translation.Second part, study background; this part introduces theory and strategy thatthe translator applied in the translating process. In addition, a further analysis of the source text and its author is also made.Third part, difficulties and solutions; this part lists solutions to some of thedifficulties discovered in the translation process.Forth part, conclusion; reliable experience and practical translation methodsare concluded for future use.
