Abstract


English for Chinese Medicine is a new and developing subject, which is based on English major and oriented to Chinese Medicine. English teaching for Chinese Medicine, as an important member in ESP, is still in its infancy. English translation for Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a key course for students studying medical English, and plays an important role in foreign exchange of TCM. The quality of translation teaching directly determines the level and quality of English teaching of TCM.In order to achieve the real translation between original language and the target language, the dynamic changes of the language must be mastered; TCM classics is rich in literal meaning and implications, while pragmatics as a relatively new discipline contains a lot of theories and researches on significance in language, specializes in language use and understanding of language dynamic. For Chinese text documents produce different understanding of meanings in different environment, it is necessary to research on how to understand and translate language in different environments of language communication (communication between authors and readers) to reduce unnecessary pragmatic failures. Achievements of pragmatic theory have already naturally become the important theory guiding English translation teaching, and also naturally become indispensable theoretical system of English translation teaching of traditional Chinese medicine. It is expected to improve teaching quality of foreign language translation and play an important role in guiding reform and development of translation teaching through the research.First of all, the author introduced the background of foreign language teaching of TCM and the research situation of pragmatics and foreign language teaching of TCM by domestic and foreign scholars, as well as the relation between pragmatics and translation teaching, pointed out the feasibility and necessity of application of pragmatics in TCM English translation teaching. Then, the author made the empirical study on English translation teaching of TCM based on pragmatics from undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. On undergraduate education studies, questionnaire survey about foreign language teaching situations carried in three universities including Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine, Guangxi University of Traditional Chinese Medicine as well as Shaanxi University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and empirical comparative analysis of three universities were made in teaching contents, teaching methods and teaching effect based on pragmatics theory. On graduate education study,10students of Medical English in Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine,3in Guangxi University of Traditional Chinese Medicine and3in Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine were investigated by questionnaire survey, survey statistics and empirical analysis were made on teaching content, teaching methods and student satisfaction based on pragmatics theory.It is feasible and necessary to apply pragmatics to foreign language translation teaching of TCM. Through empirical research, following teaching strategies are put forward for the English teaching of TCM in undergraduate level:1. Choose appropriate teaching materials;2. Pay attention to the culture of TCM;3. Attach great importance to the teaching practice;4. Strengthen the construction of teachers;5. Bring in vocabulary teaching;6. Enrich teaching evaluation. Following teaching strategies are put forward for the English teaching of TCM in graduate level:1. Increase depth and width of teaching materials;2. Strengthen classroom communication and discussion;3. Attaches great importance to study and clinical practice.
