Abstract


This report analyzes translation practice of Towards a People-centered Theory ofTranslation, focusing on the following three questions: what preparation should bedone before translating, what aspects deserve translators’ attention in the process oftranslating, and what are special techniques for academic translation.This paper first points out that translators need to prepare backgroundinformation and professional knowledge and analyze features of source text. Whentranslating, translators have to study terminology translation of that field, make cleartranslation purposes and patronage’s demands, conduct supplement and footnotingand fulfill translator’s subjectivity properly. Still, translators need to adopt somespecial techniques, like sentence restructuring, to make sentences fluent. They candeal with coherence and cohesion in special ways, and even rewrite the text inaccordance with stylistic features of academic papers.Thought academic papers are precise, academic translation is not superficialshift of language. It requires translators to have comprehensive knowledge onprofessional knowledge and stylistic features. They should be able to expressthoughts logically and smoothly. This report attaches more importance to translators’initiatives on each link of translation, but not merely studies specific techniques.
