Abstract


With the globalization, the world has become more connected than what it was years ago, which makes communication between people from different countries much easier. Language plays an important role in the process of contact and communication. According to the study on language learning, language learning strategies are very crucial in language teaching and learning. Rebecca L. Oxford’s theories on language learning strategies are the most widely studied and utilized in the field of language teaching and learning both at home and abroad, and her classification of language learning strategies into direct and indirect ones with six specific categories of strategies is very valuable for language researchers, teachers and learners, which is highly spoken of by researchers and has a profound impact on the history of the study of language learning. Actually Oxford’s Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL) is a very important instrument in studying the language learning strategies with high reliability and validity, especially in testing the relationship between language proficiency and language learning strategies.This research aims at studying the language learning strategies used by Chinese TOEFL candidates and their English proficiency:the types of language learning strategies used by Chinese TOEFL candidates, the language learning strategy making Chinese TOEFL candidates’levels of English proficiency different and the relationship between the Chinese TOEFL candidates’language learning strategies and their English proficiency.The research is mainly conducted through a questionnaire which is made out of Oxford’s SILL version7.0and named’The questionnaire about language learning strategies used by Chinese TOEFL candidates’to examine the language learning strategies used by Chinese TOEFL candidates and their English proficiency. The participants are67Chinese TOEFL candidates who have taken TOEFL exams in Northeastern University. After the author has carried out the quantitative study with the data analyses which includes item analysis, reliability analysis, correlation analysis, and linear regression analysis, the results indicate the following contents:(1)Memory strategies, cognitive strategies, compensation strategies, metacognitive strategies, affective strategies and social strategies are the language learning strategies used by Chinese TOEFL candidates. Chinese TOEFL candidates sometimes use these six categories of language learning strategies on a medium level of frequency.(2)Memory strategies, cognitive strategies, compensation strategies, metacognitive strategies, affective strategies and social strategies used by Chinese TOEFL candidates are significantly and positively related to the candidates’English proficiency and the different levels of these six categories of language learning strategies make Chinese TOEFL candidates’ English proficiency different.(3)Memory strategies, cognitive strategies, compensation strategies, metacognitive strategies, affective strategies and social strategies used by Chinese TOEFL candidates have linear relationship with their English proficiency. And the linear correlation between the six categories of language learning strategies and their English proficiency is very close. The author has concluded a predicative model of language learning strategies used by Chinese TOEFL candidates and their English proficiency.Though this study has some limitations which are concerned with the generalization, yet the findings of the current research have some implications. Theoretically, this research introduces SILL into the study of the language learning strategies used by Chinese TOEFL candidates. Practically, this research provides empirical evidence for researchers, teachers, language training centers and Chinese TOEFL candidates to understand the language learning strategies used by Chinese TOEFL candidates in Chinese context, which can be very valuable to improve Chinese TOEFL candidates’language learning strategies and promote their English proficiency.
