Abstract


There exists all kinds of artistic formats and styles; different techniques and videoimaging methods dominate the field of contemporary painting. Life drawing,especially landscape life drawing, is slowly being ignored, forgotten, and evenabandoned. So is "life drawing" truly passé? How should we approach "life drawing"now? Paintings that are alienated from nature and from the everyday life lack vitality,and I do not believe photography can replace painting; painting in a directed manner,for me, seems to be pure and full of affection. What is the contemporary value of lifedrawing if it is to be considered as a type of painting practices? How do we makesense of its history? And how are we to imagine life drawing in the age ofcontemporary painting practices? At the same time, we need to bring ourselves to thelocation--when we arrive here can we then find the answer.One of the reasons why genuine art is full of allure is because of its truthfulness anddirectness. Is the practice of painting more lively and affective if it is directly paintedon location in the manner of life drawing, or would it seem more complete andthorough if the painting is more re-arranged, more thought through, more re-designedand re-assembled? These are not the main points of discussion in this essay. What isthe historical origin of life drawing, both as a painting experience and as a way to becloser to the actual existence of the subject? In the age when many different forms ofartistic practices and painting practices co-exist, how does it carry out its allurethrough the practice of oil-painting? And how am I to utilize it? This is what thefollowing text will set forth to explain. I believe, the reason why painting can affectmany people is because of its truthfulness and freedom. It can allow our minds totravel freely, because our minds and ideas are not restricted.
