Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the adverse effects of anxiety and depression because ofInternet addiction the current study was designed. The samples were divided amongthemselves based on gender, grade, family environment, institution type, the only childto analyze the differences in anxiety and depression in Internet addiction and no Internetaddiction disorder. With the help of this investigation, we can prevent these adverse effectswhich are resulting from Internet addition.Methods:568junior middle school students were selected for this study based onstratified random sampling from3class grades. Data needed was collected by IAT(Internet Addiction Test), SAS (Self-Rating Anxiety Scale) and SDS (Self-ratingDepression Scale). The teachers from each school were trained about the way to ask thequestionnaires to get accurate data from the students before the test. T-test, chi-squaretest, F-criterion and Analysis of correlation was used to analyze the data with the helpof SPSS16.0software.Results:(1) There are568students, and the percentage of internet addition user is14.26%.(2) The percentage of internet addition of different gender is obvious difference（p<0.01）,and the percentage of boys is apparently higher than the girls’. Thepercentage of internet addition of different grade is obvious differenc（ep<0.05）,besides,the percentage is on the rise with the growth of class and it is the highest in grade3. Thepercentage of internet addition of the key middle school is lower than the generalmiddle school（p<0.05）.The percentage of internet addition of the single parent familyis higher than the two-parent family（p<0.01）.The percentage of internet addition of thethe only child is not significant difference（p>0.05）.(3) There are107students having anxiety, the detection rate is18.84%, there are129students having depressed mood, the detection rate is22.71%. (4) The anxiety scores of different genders and institustion type are statisticalsignificance（p<0.05）,and the girls’ is higher than the boys’, the key middle school’ ishigher than the general middle school. The anxiety scores of different familyenvironment and the only child are not obvious difference（p>0.05）. The depressedmood scores of different institustion type and family environment is statisticalsignificance（p<0.05）,and the key middle school’ is higher than the general middleschool, the two-parent familys’ is lower than the single parent family s’.The depressedmood scores of different gender and the only child are not significant difference（p>0.05）.(5) The anxiety scores of different grades are statistical significance（p<0.05）,andthe score of grade1is the highest, the score of grade3is in the middle, and it is thelowest in grade2. The depressed mood scores of different grades are statisticalsignificance（p<0.05）,and it is aggravating with the growth of the grade.(6) The score of anxiety and depression of the students with internet addictions isapparently higher than those without internet addiction（p<0.01）. The relation betweeninternet addiction, anxiety and depression appears to have obviously positive correlation（p<0.01）.Conclusion:(1)The percentage of internet addition user is14.26%in Dalian.(2)The percentage of internet addition among different genders、 grades、institustion types and family environments varied significantly, while the percentage ofinternet addition of the only child or not is not significant difference.(3)The detection rate of anxiety is18.84%, he detection rate of depressed mood is22.71%.(4)The anxiety scores of different gender and institustion types are statisticalsignificance. The anxiety scores of different family environments and the only childare not significant difference. The depressed mood scores of different institustiontypes and family environments are statistical significance. The depressed moodscores of different genders and the only child are not significant difference.(5)The anxiety scores and the depressed mood scores for different grades werestatistical significance.(6)The score of anxiety and depression of the students with internet addiction and without internet addiction are statistical significance. The relation between internetaddiction, anxiety and depression appears to have obviously positive correlation.
