Abstract


Euphemism is one of the most widely used human communication strategies. Chinese euphemism is based on the nation’s unique cultural psychology of moderation. Using euphemism is a necessary communication tool for maintain a polite communication with Chinese. Therefore the skilling apply of euphemisms is a significant criterion of measuring the communicative competence for foreign students.The thesis applies Inter-language pragmatics as a theoretical background, using survey as the main research method combining with interview. Thesis descript the overall situation of euphemism acquisition of learners at intermediate and advanced level, discovering the inter-language features of the euphemisms used by foreign learners through comparing it with Chinese’, analyzing the two major obstacles and their causes of euphemism’s acquisition and proposing appropriate teaching strategies and researching structure.Thesis concludes that the average level of euphemisms acquisition of both levels’is around 60%; language level has positive correlation with acquisition of euphemism; cultural background also impact the euphemism acquisition, the euphemism acquisition of the learners from Asian values area is better than learner’s from other regions under the same language level; the euphemisms used by language learners’has clear inter-language features which present on sentence structure and language strategies and etc., negative pragmatic immigration constraints euphemism acquisition; insufficient language ability and cultural difference are the crucial barriers among the euphemism acquisition by foreign Chinese learners.The thesis is the first euphemism study which design the questionnaire based on the current general syllabus of Teaching Chinese as a Second Language and also design a quantitative scoring system for the questionnaire, secondly the thesis analyze the euphemism acquisition constraint from the barriers prospective.
