Bamboo Basket, a very common manual folk craft, is very popular in the Jiangnan region. Jiangnan bamboo baskets, mostly made of bamboo, are in various styles and colors and are with full range of functions for utilization. They are closely linked to people’s work and life. The bamboo basket features in clear pragmatic characteristics, as it is to completely meet the demands of people’s daily life, such as in productive labor, the occasions to mark the climate and other natural phenomena of the seasons, marriage and funerals, beliefs and religions; at the same time, its shape, emblazonry, color and connotation also reflect the significance of folk culture; the exquisite bamboo basket’s decorative design and manufacture method also integrate weave, lacquer, sculpting, embroidery and bronze-manufacturing as a whole, which reveal the typical features of Jiangnan folk art. Through the traditional apprentice method passing from father to son, master to apprentice, the weaving craft of bamboo basket has been inherited and developed for thousands of years, and become an important component of Jiangnan folk culture, as it withholds the intelligence and wisdom of generations of working class. This paper focuses on Jiangnan folk craft-bamboo basket, and tries to carry out the comprehensive discussion on the bamboo basket’s development process, functions, manufacturing craft, artistic characteristics, close relation with Jiangnan populace’s life, connotation of folk culture and modern transition, with combination of field investigation and relevant materials, especially the materials of investigation and interview, and through the methods of art design, history research and folklore; and it aims to reveal the design materials of bamboo basket with Jiangnan features, so as to provide the material evidence and reference for developing Jiangnan traditional folk craft, and researching and protecting this intangible heritage.
