On the Centralized Channel Allocation Strategy Based on Super-slot in Cognitive Radio Networks

Abstract


In the wireless communication networks, the scarcity of spectrum resources is anindisputable fact. With only the static method, the shortage pressure of spectrum resourceis difficult to be alleviated. The dynamic spectrum allocation strategy which caneffectively improve the spectrum utilization has become a hot issue in the researches ofthe wireless communications. Considering the Cognitive Radio Network environments, acentralized channel allocation strategy based on a super-slot is proposed, and amathematical model is established. Moreover, performance analysis and systemoptimization are also conducted.Firstly, for the S-CSAS (Slot Based Centralized Spectrum Allocation Strategy),considering the general transmission time for the packets of secondary users, a queueingmodel with possible transmission interruption is established. By using the method of anembedded Markov chain, the system stationary distributions are given. With numericalexperiments, the influence of the traffic load for the secondary users and the arrival ratefor the packets of the primary users on the system performance is investigatedquantitatively. Then the traffic load of the secondary users is optimized.Secondly, in order to improve the throughput of secondary users, to reduce thechannel switching ratio, and to decrease the interferences to primary users as much aspossible, several continuous slots are combined into a super-slot. Letting the primary usersaccess channel with a preemptive priority based on a super-slot, a SS-CCAS (Super-SlotBased Centralized Channel Allocation Strategy) is proposed. A queueing model withpossible interruption at the boundary of a super-slot is established. Then the systemperformance of the SS-CCAS strategy is analyzed by using the method of a matrixgeometry solution.Thirdly, based on the SS-CCAS strategy, in order to improve the responseperformance of secondary users, the data packets of secondary users to enter the system islimited and a SS-CCAS-AT (Super-Slot Based Channel Allocation Strategy with AnAccess Threshold) in Cognitive Radio Networks is proposed. A queueing model withpossible interruption at the boundary of a super-slot and an access threshold is established. Then the system performance of the SS-CCAS-AT strategy is analyzed by using aGauss-Seidel method.Finally, through numerical experiments with analysis and simulation, the tradeoffbetween different performance metrics is investigated. For the SS-CCAS strategy, a profitfunction is constructed to optimize the super-slot size. For the SS-CCAS-AT strategy, acost function is constructed to optimize the access threshold and super-slot size.
