Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is a microwave imaging system which canbe used in all weather and day-night conditions. Different scatteringcharacteristic of land feature lead to different electromagnetic response ofPolarized electromagnetic wave. So much more information can be obtained byusing multi-polarized SAR system, which can raise the reliability of the SARsystem. At the same time the data volume of SAR system increase significantlybecause of data transmitting and storing. Effective compression of POLSAR rawdata is clearly one of the best solutions. POLSAR data has four channels (HH,HV, VH and VV). Each channel of POLSAR can be seen as a single-channelSAR, so some methods for single-channel SAR raw data compression can alsobe used. But for POLSAR, relative polarization information between differentchannels is more important. Compression method that can preserve relativephase information is needed for POLSAR raw data.Firstly the dissertation briefly introduces the characteristic of SAR signal,then the statistical properties of POLSAR raw data is analyzed. The amplitudeand phase distribution of each channel for POLSAR raw data are given. Thephase difference between co-polarized (HH and VV) and cross-polarized (HVand VH) channel is also discussed. Then the data compression method for lossycompression is introduced.For POLSAR raw data, Block Adaptive Quantization compression methodfor each channel is given. Then Amplitude-Phase algorithm for each channel isanalyzed to preserve the phase information of different channels for POLSAR.On the basis of Amplitude-Phase algorithm, the Phase difference encodingalgorithm is studied to preserve the polarimetric phase information betweendifferents channels of POLSAR.
