The subject of the automatic recognition of license plate is one of the most significant subjects which are improved from the connection of computer vision and pattern recognition. In the Automatic License Plate Recognition System, the first step is to get the license plate image from the segment. Then we should segment and extract each character on the license plate which is the important step in license plate recognition. The rate of recognition is based on whether getting a direct impact on the character or not.Firstly, the status of the license plate recognition system and existing technologies in-depth study through the preparation of Matlab documents on a variety of license plate image processing methods to analyze, compare, and make pre-license plate, license plate location, Character segmentation and recognition method. The design of the color image analysis and processing, extraction of the blue color image, which initially set the license plate area; longer binary image after the further processing of license plate, license plate to get the exact area; through the column scanning method for character segmentation and the standardization of characters segmented; get next character for character recognition.Character recognition uses template matching method. On the first step, intercept the characters on the horizontal and vertical scanning and document scanning to a few strokes. Then scan about four directions of the upper and lower boundaries and determine whether there is a long border Edge and record. By extracting these features and using the values of these characteristics with the stored value of the template to compare the word, the character is identified.By analyzing the hardware structure of the algorithm, Completing system integration by adding inherent component and edge detection module in SOPC Builder software, completing the system hard integration、simulation、compilation and download in Quartus Ⅱ software, completing system software design in Nios Ⅱ software, Finally, analyzing the use of resources、the effect of edge detection and processing speed.
