Abstract


In recent years,3D data visualization and processing tech has become more andmore close to our daily life. It always will utilize CAD tech to construct3D models incomputer such as data acquisition of3D virtual city construction,3D buildingsimulating for building design, design and modeling virtual game world, design toysor digitalization of antique. Editing and processing a mass of models is a heavy joband it needs too many labours. However, the most modeling tools rely on userinteractivity too much and haven’t utilized the feature of model itself to improve theefficiency of editing. So editing the models which have many repetitive parts isdifficult.In this article, we will aim on that issue and propose an efficiency symmetrydetection method which can improve editing speed for3D models. Our method isbased on traditional method of symmetry detection, but we prominently improve theefficiency of symmetry detection by using the analysis of curvature feature andinteract with user and also held the quality of detection result. Our method has twocontributions:1. By using curvature feature of model surface and filter out the ridge andconcave line through morphological operator, we can use these feature lines as datasource, such that the sample points on these feature will have higher quality andsmaller number, this will help us to hold the quality of result when reducing thenumber of sample points. According to experiment result, our curvature feature basedmethod could at least double the efficiency of detection.2. Our method combined user interaction with symmetry detection workflow.Users can use some little interaction to help the algorithm compute the symmetrysurfaces they want rapidly. By marking the small parts of surfaces, our algorithm canuse these high quality and small number of vertex to accelerate detection. Accordingto experiment result, our interactive symmetry detection method not only has betterspeed in interactive application context, but also has much more accuracy that canfind out small symmetry parts on the model.
