Abstract


Health is a wish shared by people all around the world. In recent years, food security crisis and disputes over medical care have grown, contributing to the emergence of public health care issues. As media reports about healthcare are on the rise, the public show growing concern over this issue. Illness has presented a variety of metaphorical meaning after being reported by the media, which poses an influence on public cognition of AIDS. In-depth studies on health communication provide theoretical references to reports on illness.Choosing reports of SARS on newspaper and those of AIDS on TV as its targets, this paper will, from an interdisciplinary perspective and by document and content analysis methods, make an analysis on the ideological nature of illness metaphors from several aspects, including mechanism of news discourse, critics over media culture, semiology, narratology and so forth, and on how public media have shaped the social meaning of illness metaphors.An illnesses interpreted by the media contains lots of metaphors, covering social and cultural meanings or others. Media remarks have become the outcome of competing interests of several sides with ideology involved in news texts about the illness. Once presented by the media, the illness is not the same with what the public have learned about it. In the study, it can be found that SARS is presented as war metaphor, while AIDS as "others" and plague metaphor and so forth. It is recommended that the media should focus on their social responsiblity of giving real health information to the public, and explain the illness itself by separating metaphors from the illness.
