A Study on Open Space Spatial-temporal Changes and Driving Factors in Wuhan City

The urbanization rate of China has exceeded50%and reached51.3%in year2011. The urbanization in China will be no more only pursuing the development of economic. More attentions would be paid in the ecological construction and the coordination between the development of city and protection of environment. But in fact, the speed of the urban expansion is so amazing that the decreasing trend of Open Space has not been fully controlled. As a result, it brings the changes inside of land use structure, aggravation of conflicts in land use and damages of benefits from Open Space. In the long term, the unreasonable reduction of Open Space will weaken the city’s competitiveness and affect the balance of urban ecosystem. This paper chooses As a typical case, Wuhan was chosen to analyzed. Open Space and its patterns of status from year of2001to2010are analyzed with abundant data including remote sensing data, land use data, social-economic data and literature materials. Finally, this research concluded the mechanism of Open Space patterns formation and evolution. The drivers behind the evolution of Open Space are defined through the analysis of regression.The study shows that the total amount of Open Space had reduced8929.51hectare with a decline of41.04%. The level of per amount of Open Space reduced from53.68m2to26.58m2in year2001-2010. At the same time, the difference among districts is remarkable. In contrast to relative quantity, the open space in Wuchang is24.32times decreased higher than Hankou and9.33times in open space per capita. The gap between total open space of Wuchang and Hankou has lessened in2010. Hanyang has the most dramatic change from2001to2010in absolute numbers. The range is51.26%. But Wuchang is the top one on the amount decrease. The total is7480.85hectare. The total open space imbalance phenomenon is prominent. There is regional difference between three land types. The plantation changes severely in Wuchang district in a relative rate of1.0. The lakes decreased severely in Hanyang district in a relative rate of2.182. The green space also changes severely in Wuchang district in a relative rate of3.6. In the opposite and the relative gradient of Hanyang district’s green space is negative1.286. The direction is opposite to the direction of change of the whole city green space. And the range is higher. There are obvious differences between the three land types. The major component is lakes in Wuhan’s open space. In2010, Wuhan’s suburban farmland ownership is only35.44%in2001.It decreases in an amazing amount and the range comes to64.56%. The green space has a higher change magnitude than plantation and lakes with a greater change range.Based on the conclusion of the evolution of Open Space,10driving factors was chosen:Total population (X1), non-agricultural population proportion of the total population (X2), gross domestic product (X3), the proportion of primary industry (X4), output value of secondary and tertiary industries (X5), revenue of local government (X6), disposable income (X7), GDP per capita (X8), consumption expenditure per capita (X9), total fixed asset investment (X10). Finally, Disposable income per capita and output value of secondary and tertiary industries are core impact factors after the test of linear regression.
