Abstract


With the pace of industrialization development, the economy level has beengrowing rapidly. But at the same time, the environmental pollution has become anincreasingly important issue, people have to confront the dilemma over economicdevelopment and environmental protection. Compare to other Asia-Pacific countries,the total carbon dioxide emissions of China have become the world’s first, we musthave a correct understanding of the facts. In addition, as a developing country, China’sper capita carbon emissions are still low, but in the past10years the growth trend wasespecially significant, emission reduction pressure must not be belittled. China is inthe key period of economic development, it is an important task to correctly handlethe relationship between the economic development and the carbon emissionreduction for the current industrialization development.This thesis adopts a combination of qualitative and quantitative analysis toresearch the driving factors of carbon emissions in the Asia-Pacific region. First, thethesis carries a comparative analysis to the current condition of carbon emissions of18counties in the Asia-Pacific region including China. Then, the author uses thequalitative method summarize the mechanism of different driving factors taking effectover the carbon dioxide emissions, and it takes a prediction on every factor’sinfluencing direction and degree of developed countries and developing countries.The driving factors include population, affluence, energy intensity, industrial structure,urbanization level and opening degree. Afterwards, based on panel data of18Asia-Pacific countries from1994to2008, the author uses the quantitative methodtake an empirical analysis on the relationship among per capita carbon dioxideemissions, per capita GDP, energy intensity, industrial structure, urbanization leveland opening degree with the use of STIRPAT Model.The empirical results mainly correspond with the theoretical analysis conclusion.The results show that different driving factors make different influence on developedcountries and developing countries. The growth of economy and export trade make anegative effect on developed countries’ per capita carbon emissions, which is contraryto the developing countries; The increase of carbon dioxide intensity and urbanizationlevel play significant and positive roles in increasing per capita carbon emissions ofboth developed countries and developing countries, the influence degree is greater in developed countries; Industrial structure also has a positive effect on carbonemissions.At last, according to the empirical results, it puts forward some relevant policysuggestions.
