Abstract

The flower industry has been developing rapidly over the recent20years in China. Nanjing is located in the Yangtze Delta Plain that is one of the most developed regions in China. As it is in the whole country, the flower industry in Nanjing has been blooming as well, and has been one of the five supporting industries in agriculture. In addition, as the rapid economic development and growing urbanization, especially the implementation of the "Green Nanjing" plan and the structural regulation in agriculture, it is of great importance to clarify the developmental history and status quo of the flower industry in Nanjing. Then, we can make a scientific decision regarding the future growth of the flower industry in Nanjing.Thus, under the support of Nanjing bureau of agriculture and forestry, we intensively investigated the developmental history of the flower industry in Nanjing through document analyses combined with market survey. Our investigation included the production, consumption and marketing of flowers and their cultivars and structure. In addition, the current status of the scientific research and technology innovation related to the flower industry in Nanjing was elucidated. Finally, we summarized the strength and weakness of the flower industry in Nanjing and suggested the goal and orientation of the flower industry as well as the measures ensuring the rapid and healthy growth of the flower industry in Nanjing. Our main conclusions are as follows:1. The history of the flower industry in NanjingThe flower industry has long history and deep culture in Nanjing, which was initiated in Dongjin dynasty and had a considerable scale in Ming and Qing dynasties with specialized production during the republic of China. In the1950s and1960s, new flower cultivars were introduced and related production and research were carried out as well until the outbreak of the great Cultural Revolution.The commercialization of the flower industry in Nanjing started in the late of1970s and the early of1980s, which could be divided into four stages:starting (1978～1984), recovery (1986～1994), rapid development (1995～2003), and steady development (after2004). Until2007, the total area of flower amounted to17.15thousand hectares, which was17.2times as large as in1998, while the gross domestic production only increased by3.13folds during the same period. At the same time, the network for production, transportation and sales of flowers was rapid constructed. From1996to2006, the area of flower markets increased by30times with the volume of business increasing by39times. The number of flower stores grew from1in1980to40in1980and570in2006with the he volume of business increasing from80thousand Yuan to4.1million in1990and77.22million in2006.2. The actuality of flower industry in NanjingThe flower growing area was up to259.5million Mu and the sale was close to10billion Yuan in Nanjing by the end2007.Industry scale ranged among the forefront of the Jiangsu Province. Industry area and industry sale was second and third, respectively.The flower industry trended in diversifications, including horticulture seedling, potted flower, foliage plant, bonsai, aquatic flowers, turf and so on.Horticulture seedling occupied a dominant position. The area reached96.9%in total area and sale reached92.7%in total sale.This was followed by potted plant, including potted flower, bonsai and foliage plant. Potted flower was the main part with the scale up to90%in potted plant.Moreover; there was a certain size for cutting flower, turf and aquatic flowers.There were1926corporations that owned planting area more than30Mu in Nanjing City. They account for11.97%in total florists. Annul turnover (including circulation) of flower company was13.87billion Yuan. The modes of Production-type, circulation-type, derived by grand-type, sightseeing-type had been formed. There were48companies with sales more than one million. They were up to4%in total sale.There were6integrated flower markets for trades. The volume of business reached3.9716billion Yuan and the number of flower stores was up to570.3. Ideas, targets and countermeasures for development flower industry in NanjingThe general ideas were established for development flower industry in Nanjing. Characteristics of floral industry will be formed by relying on scientific and technological progress, adoption of a new technology.Leading enterprises and industrial park in floral industry should be guided by the market. Meanwhile, resources must be integrated, investment must be increased. Format of research, production and sale should be actively explored for new variety. Independent intellectual property should be cultivated for floral varieties and brands by setting brand strengthen Market competition. Information and services network construction should be further strengthened. Technology promotion and Service system should be establish and improve to speed development.Development of floral industry in Nanjing is orientated. It was confirmation of production in horticulture seedling and accelerating the development of potted flower and featured flowers.The target is that production base with300thousand Mu for production of horticulture seedling, production base with500hm2of potted flower and featured flowers. The sale will be up to20to30billion Yuan. Safeguards must be consummated well. Competitive can be improved by science and technology. Accordingly, floral industrial park will be set up. Specialty products are developed and brand is supported. Brand flower and company are settled up. Network of flower is established by modern means. The system of information and society is strengthened. Government plays a leading role in construction of market system. Strengthening market construction, improvement service quality, increasing services, up service grade and guiding consumption promotes ecological civilization.
