Team Temporal Coordination Mechanisms and Their Effects on Team Effectiveness:Based on Team Temporal Mental Model

Abstract


With the diffusion of information technology, the accelerating of work pace and the increasing of team interaction, teams in modern organizations always face kinds of new problems of time, including fragmentation, multiplicity, ambiguity and uncertainty, which leading to frequent temporal conflicts and task procrastination within teams, and sense of out of control and disorder of time within team members. Against this background, the concepts and management approaches of time with the clock time concept which is popular in the industrialized society have been unable to handle the new problems of time modem teams facing. Within modern teams, we have to discard the concepts and management approaches of time characterized with linear, continuous, regular, homogeneous and unidirectional time, and treat time with a flexible, comprehensive, and appropriate way in team, while developing corresponding new management approaches of time in teams to get better performance and members’satisfaction. In a sense,"team temporal coordination mechanism" beyond the clock time concept which views time as resources, and develops a new understanding and management approaches of time in teams, combining the clock time concept and the social time concept. In this study, we explore the concept connotation, types, and the relationships with team performance and team effectiveness of team temporal coordination mechanism, gradually its black boxes of content and process. This study can be divided into four sub-studies.Sub-study1aims at the defects of existing researches of team temporal coordination mechanism, including connotation ambiguity, type division disorder and lacks of reality portray. First of all, we re-define the team temporal coordination mechanism based interdependence and temporal interdependence and existing theories of team coordination and team coordination mechanism. Then, we explore the classification of team temporal coordination mechanism from the dimensions of explicit/implicit and mechanical/organic, revealing four types of team temporal coordination mechanism and analyzing their connections and distinctions. Next, we describe these four types of team temporal coordination mechanism with3knowledge-based teams in3enterprises by the method of multi-cases study. At last, we analyze the dominant temporal coordination mechanism in different teams due to the differences of task property and task environment.Sub-study2focuses on team temporal cognition, a neglected implicit temporal coordination mechanism, and on the shortage of the studies relating to team shared temporal understanding. We expand the connotation of the construct of temporal team mental model based on dimension theory of time and team mental model theory, and divide the temporal team mental model into three sub-models, which are temporal model of team task, temporal model of team routine, temporal model of members’ characteristic. Then, we develop the measuring scales of TTMM to lay the conceptual foundations for the further studies of team shared temporal understanding.Sub-study3further explores the temporal team mental model and its impact on team performance. First of all, the author tests the temporal team mental model’s and its sub-models’effect on team performance, which open the black boxes of temporal team mental model in content and process to some extent. Then the interactive effects of the sub-models of temporal team mental model and their influences on team performance are tested. Lastly, the author explores the moderating effects of temporal pressure in the relationship between temporal team mental model and its sub-models with team performance.Sub-study4aims at the shortage of the existing studies of team temporal coordination mechanism, which focus on explicit temporal coordination mechanism represented by team temporal leadership and overlook the implicit temporal coordination mechanism. The author introduces team temporal mental model as implicit temporal coordination mechanism, investigating its relationship with team effectiveness and team temporal leadership. The results of the statistic analysis of114knowledge-based teams show that team temporal leadership and team temporal mental model has significant influence on team performance and members’ satisfaction; team temporal mental model significantly mediates the relationship between team temporal leadership and team effectiveness:team temporal pressure significantly moderates the relationship between of temporal leadership-temporal mental model and temporal leadership-team effectiveness.Compared with the existing research, the innovative points of this research mainly display in the following three aspects:(1) the explicit definition of "team temporal coordination mechanism"; the construction of the classification system of team temporal coordination mechanism based the two dimensions of explicit/implicit and mechanical/organic; explore the connections and distinctions of these four types;(2) extending the connotation of temporal team mental model and develop the measuring scales of temporal team mental model to lay the conceptual foundations for the further studies of team shared temporal understanding;(3) exploring the temporal team mental model’s and its sub-models’ effects on team performance, and investigating the interactive effects of the three sub-models;(4) analyzing the relationship of explicit temporal coordination mechanism and implicit temporal coordination mechanism, and their effects on team effectiveness, which opens the black box of process of team temporal coordination mechanism.The practical significance includes:(1) emphasizing the importance of time in team management, pushing time from background to the stage, advocating the comprehensive use of team temporal coordination mechanism to manage time in teams;(2) emphasizing the importance of temporal leadership and temporal team mental model in time management in team;(3) exploring new understandings and management approaches to time in group to response to the new temporal issue modern teams face.
