Abstract


Since China’s reform and opening up, Southeast Asian ethnic Chinese business groups began large-scale entering China mainland which opened a new era of investing in China mainland. Philippine ethnic Chinese business group is a representative of Southeast Asian ethnic Chinese business groups. Most of Philippine ethnic Chinese business groups were founded in1950s and1960s and grew up fast during1970s and1980s. After China’s reform and opening up, Philippine ethnic Chinese business groups began entering China mainland gradually and have achieved good results since then. The investment in China mainland by Philippine ethnic Chinese business groups not only helped to promote the economic development of China and the Philippines, but also played a role of a bridge for exchanges between China and the Philippines. The academic circle had some studies of Philippine ethnic Chinese business groups investment in China mainland and has achieved some study results. However, most of the existing results focused on the overall situation of the Southeast Asian ethnic Chinese business groups investment in China mainland and lacked of in-depth analysis of Philippine ethnic Chinese business groups investment in China mainland. Meanwhile, most of the studies focused on the time before2000and relevant studies after2000were still rare.The paper took Philippine ethnic Chinese business groups investing in China mainland since China’s reform and opening up as the study object and selected several representative ethnic Chinese business groups in the Philippines, such as Asia World, SM Group, JG SUMMIT HOLDINGS and Lucio Tan family enterprise group, for study cases to systematically comb the specific investment projects and especially to analyze the situation of these Philippine ethnic Chinese business groups, mentioned above, investing in China mainland in recent10years. Based on the study of the typical cases, this paper analyzed the reasons of Philippine ethnic Chinese business groups investing in China mainland from interest and emotion factors since China’s reform and opening up and summarized the characteristics of Philippine ethnic Chinese business groups investment in China mainland in terms of investment region, investment field, source of funds and investment style etc. Through analyzing existing materials, this paper tried to generalize the problems existing in the process of Philippine ethnic Chinese business groups investment in China mainland and further made a prospect of Philippine ethnic Chinese business groups investing in China mainland in the future.
