Abstract

Research on radiative forcing, as well as climate and environment effects of aerosol has been one of the hot topics in the research field of atmospheric science. However, there are a great deal of uncertainties in this topic, fundamentally owing to shortage of the space/time observations of aerosol radiative characteristics.Although surface observation and remote sensing are important methods to acquire physical, chemical and radiative properties of aerosol in detail, satellite remote sensing (SRS) gains the unique superiority that it is able to detect global aerosol characteristics at high spatial resolution, which is the reason why satellite sensing has been developed greatly in recent decades all over the world. In spite of the rapid development of satellite sensing for aerosol optical thickness (AOT), its detections are still questionable with several outcomes for reasons that the aerosol properties are dominated by significant spatial/temporal variations, many physical factors have certain influence on SRS products, and the SRS contains limited information. Therefore, validation of the SRS products is an important precondition for fully usage of the products. In this paper, four sets of AOT products from three space-borne radiometer was evaluated by AOT products from surface aerosol remote sensing network founded in 2001 over China mainland by the support of National Natural Science Foundation of China and some international cooperation programs. Results suggest that 1) MODIS-dark AOT products over regions with high surface reflectance have the highest precision among the study data, with mean deviation and root-mean-square error being 0.02 and 0.18 compared with surface remote sensing results, respectively; 2) MISR products are lower than the surface observations with mean deviation of 0.14; 3) retrieval precision of the MODIS-Deepblue products and OMI data need further improved ; 4) from the comparisons among regional results, MISR dataset are most precise in the arid and semi-arid areas of West China. MODIS-dark products and MISR products are analyzed for the AOT trends in six regions over China in 2000-2007. Both datasets display that aerosol optical thickness has significant seasonal characteristics, with higher/lower data in the spring and summer/ autumn and winter, while AOT in West China is decreased slightly in the study period, as opposed to those in North and South China, particular in South China for about 0.08 increase during 2000-2008.
