Abstract

Cordierite monolithic hydrodesulfurization catalysts were prepared with the methods of painting and impregnation. The prepared catalysts were characterized by means of XRD, N2 adsorption/desorption, SEM and XPS. The hydrodesulfurization performance of the catalysts were experimentally investigated by taking thiophene hydrodesulfurization as model reaction in a fixed bed reactor. The results of the influences of acid treatment on the cordierite and its coating property showed that the acid treatment could increase the BET surface area, micropore, and loading content of the cordierite. When the cordierites were boiled with oxalic acid for 1 h and 4 h, respectively, the surface area of cordierite increased from 0.8 m2/g to 50.7 m2/g and 188.4 m2/g. The loading rate increased from 8% to 10% and 25%. Under the satisfied mechanical requirement of the cordierite, the higher concentration of the acid and the longer boiling time led to the better catalyst coating property. The results of the catalytic performance indicated that the performance was influenced by the coating pH value, the type of sols, the cell density of cordierite and the hole extender. When the catalysts were prepared with the method of painting, it was found that (1) The monolithic catalyst loaded with pH=3 silica sol exhibited higher HDS activities. (2) The activities of catalysts increased with increasing the cell density of cordierite. When the catalysts were prepared with 400 and 600 cpsi cordierites, the conversion of thiophene was 87.75% and 78.02% at 325°C. (3) The catalysts prepared with silica sol had better catalytic performance. (4) The catalysts added with proper urea exhibited higher HDS activities. When there wasn’t urea in the collid, the HDS performance of catalysts which were prepared with silica and alumina sol was 70.02% and 68.8% at 300°C. When there was urea in the collid, the conversion of thiophene increased to 88.66% and 85.03%; When the catalysts were prepared with the method of impregnation, it was found that (1) The loading rate of the cordierite which was coated with three sols followed the order: silica and alumina sol >alumina sol> silica sol. (2) The urea played a major role in the loading rate of the cordierite. (3) The catalytic performance of catalysts prepared under the same experimental condition followed the order: alumina sol>silica and alumina sol>silica sol.
