Abstract

Single-chamber solid oxide fuel cell (SC-SOFC), which consists of only one chamber, wherein both the anode and cathode are exposed to unique fuel-oxidant mixtures, is a novel type fuel cell characterized by eliminating sealing and simplifying the structure. Electrolyte-supported SC-SOFC is not only an important branch of SC-SOFC but also the focus of this paper. According to the configuration of the cell, electrolyte-supported SC-SOFC has been divided into two types. One is the A-type geometry of SC-SOFC that anode and cathode are located on opposite sides of electrolyte, The other is the B-type geometry of SC-SOFC whose anode and cathode were located in the same side of electrolyte. In recent years, most researches regarding SC-SOFC had focused on the A design, whereas a few studies have been reported on the B type.In this paper, fabrication and testing of the electrolyte-supported SC-SOFC were studied through a series of experiments. The effects of mixed gas flow rate were studied, CH4(133 sccm), O2(67 sccm) and N2(100 sccm)were selected as the flow parameters in the following measurement.Though the study of stability of electrolyte-supported SC-SOFC, the oscillatory behaviour of OCV is due to oxidation and reduction cycles ongoing on the nickel surface. Therefore, it is necessary to enlarge the area of original anode to ensure the output of non-oscillatory of cell. We also considered it is the main reason for the rapid decline of cell that the particle size of anode powder does not match each other. The result of experiment demonstrated that change in particle size of YSZ could restrain the rapid recession of cell. Finally, the A-type and B-type cell have been fabricated by the mending methods mentioned above and the result of experiment showed that above initiatives could improve the performance of cell.Through establishing the simplified model of electrolyte supported B-type SC-SOFC, the relationship between the test temperature, the thickness of electrolyte, electrode spacing ,electrode width and the electrolyte ohmic resistance were analysed in an emi-quantitative manner. there is still a technical difficulty that the gap between two electrodes is to reduced to less than 0.5 mm accurately though manual operating. Hence, we demonstrated two new design, groove-type cell and angle surface-type cell, to decrease ohmic resistance of the B-type cell by altering configuration of cell instead of changing gap between electrodes. This groove-type cell combines the configurable advantages of two types of conventional SO-SOFC and extend channel of current to decrease ohmic resistance. The peak power density of cell could be improved to 17.2 mW/cm2 while the peak power density of conventional B-type cell was only 11.1 mW/cm2. The peak power density and total cell impedance of angle surface-type cell was 49.8 mW/cm2 and 2.55Ωcm2at 750°C, respectively, which was a more desirable results. The SC-SOFC stack with two single cells was fabricated in the one ladder-chip electrolyte substrate. The OCV and peak power density were only 1 V and 4 W at 750°C, but it proved that simple and compact SC-SOFC stack could be assembled with the configuration of angle surface-type design. More excellent OCV and performance will be expected to attain by the further investigation in the future.
