Abstract

The web-encased steel-concrete composite (WESCC) beam is a new type of steel-concrete composite beam which develops on the basis of the.investigation and application of steel-concrete composite beam and steel reinforced concrete beam. Its main constitution way is that the stirrup are penetrated into the web of steel girder then with up flange plate simultaneously pouring concrete, which forms web-encased steel-concrete composite beam with cast-in-place reinforced concrete up flange plate. The perfobond connectors were used as the shear connectors in the WESCC beam. Comparing with the traditional steel-concrete composite beam and reinforced concrete beam, the WESCC beam has lots of merits, such as higher supporting capacity, ductility, safe margin, also has a well fire protection performance, the construction craft, higher overall performance target. Experimental and theoretical investigation of the WESCC beams were conducted in this text. The main research work and results are as follows:1. Experiments of nine simply supported WESCC beam specimens were conducted, the failure modes which under static load were studied. Strain distribution over the depth of the WEBCC beams, curve of load vs. strain of bottom armor plate at midspan of specimens, strain distribution over the depth of the steel section at main load segments and midspan moment-deflection curves of test beams were all analyzed. The mechanical behavior of the WESCC beam was essential comprehend.2. The WESCC beam approximately conforms to the horizontal section hypothesis. The perfobond shear connector has high strength of resisting shear. The failure of the WESCC beams wasn’t caused by the failure of the shear connectors.3. The calculation formulas of the bearing capacity of bending and flexural rigidity were deduced in this article, the deflection of the WESCC beams of type II and III take the influence of shear deformation into account. The calculation results which accord to the formulas in this article are in good agreement with the experimental results. The calculation formula of the bearing capacity of shear was deduced on the basis of the theory of steel reinforced concrete beam via experimental data. The research results of the article provide experiment and theory basis and reference for actual project application of this new type of composite beam.
