Ornamental grasses are those herbaceous plants with ornamental value. Ornamental grasses is a new garden plant material with great ornamental value, as excellent additions to different environments of urban green spaces, have various species, combining with their unique shapes, foliage colors, inflorescences, easy propagation and maintenance. In this paper, the primary investigate and research of main resources of ornamental grasses in Shandong Province were concerned and the ornamental grasses resources were also evaluated, the uses of them in landscape design were groped preliminarily; And ornamental grass, as a new kind of ornamental plant with unique value, if they have ornamental value and feasible application had discussed by the numbers. The researches will indicate the academic significance and practical value. Results are as follows:(1) Having been investigating the ornamental grasses in Shandong province, the germplasm resources of the ornamental grasses were tidied up at present, the results showed that 8 families including Gramineae, Cyperaceae, Juncaceae, Araceae, Typhaceae, Butomaceae, Liliaceae and Chenopodiaceae were investigated, and the kinds of Gramineae were more than others.(2) Ornamental grasses showed excellent characters such as plant type, line texture, type and color of flower, texture and color of leaf, dynamic and rhythm. Pay more attention about landscape application and morphological character, we discussed the ornamental character of ornamental grasses in Shandong province. In conclusion, the highness changed sharply from ten centimeter to one meter with great span; plant type, line texture, type and color of flower, texture and color of leaf were different among them, About dynamic and rhythm, most of the ornamental grasses planted together could bring us elegant feeling, even some kinds had great value with mostly ornamental characters. Above all, these germplasm resources had different kinds of ecotope, not only including aquatic and wet kinds such as Phragmites communis, Typha orientalis but also including drought tolerant plants such as Ennisetum orientale, to fit different kinds of plant design in Shandong province.(3) Based on the principles of landscape ecology, the application and planting design of ornamental grasses in flower border, ground covers, slope greening, waterside, rock garden and landscape elements mode were analyzed. The results showed the application in landscape were more and more abroad as fine material because of excellent characters. And the best sight of the ornamental grasses was different because of configurations of the ornamental grasses with different landscape elements: the configuration of the ornamental grasses with topography emphasized particularly on the artistic conception and the color; and the two aspects of layout and artistic conception were important for the configuration of the ornamental grasses with the path and square; the landscape buildings configurations of the ornamental grasses paid more attention to the color and the layout, followed by the artistic conception; the configuration of the ornamental grasses with the landscape plants needed think of the layout and the artistic conception; the layout was the most important for the configuration of the ornamental grasses with the essays. Meanwhile, ornamental grasses are often most effective in landscape designs that allow them to interplay with other plants including trees, shrubs and diversified flowers. Ornamental grasses can not only be used in parterres, borders, but also be used as ground cover plants in gardens, parks; They can make a big areas sight if be planted flakily or in group, however, other plants should be planted in order to adjust blankness and supply fresh.(4) Based on the results, the application of ornamental grasses in landscape were analysed, we showed the use of them was on the preliminary stage, the application of ornamental grasses in landscape was not widely, and application form was single with few species. Further more, the research and the prospective future of the ornamental grasses applied in landscape architecture were also illustrated.
