Abstract

The strobilurin fungicides are an important class of agricultural compounds, the discovery of which was based on the natural fungicidal derivatives of strobulirin A. Because of their high activity against various plant diseases and very low toxicity to human and environment, many international and domestic pesticide companies have paid heavy attention on development of new strobilurin fungicides. In this study, we systemically investigated the biological activities for the two new strobilurin compounds developed by the Institute of Zhejiang Chemical Industry. We also investigated the resistance of Blumeria graminis f.sp. tritici to a new strobilurin fungicide ZJ0712 developed by our institute. Here are the major results from this study.A novel Strobilurin compound ZJ2211 was synthesized recently by the National Center for Research and Development of Pesticide (NCRDP) at Zhejiang Base. The antifungal activity of this compound was evaluated in this study. Results from greenhouse tests indicated that the compound showed high antifungal activity against various phytopathogenic pathogens including Ascomycetes, Oomycetes, and Deuteromycetes. Results form field trials indicated that the ZJ2211 at 100-200 mg/L was very effective against cucumber downy mildew caused by Pseudoperonospora cubensis when the compound was applied at the early stage of the disease cycle. The efficacy of ZJ2211 was similar to that of the azoxystrobin in the field experiments. Greenhouse tests and field trials indicated that ZJ2211 at 50-200 mg/L did not show any phytotoxic activity to tested crops.A second new strobilurin compound ZJ1621 was also developed recently by the NCRDP at Zhejiang Base with an independent intellectual property right. The antifungal activities of the compound were evaluated in this study. The results from both greenhouse and field trials showed that compound showed high antifungal activity against various phytopathogenic pathogens. At 50-100 mg/L, the compound was very effective against the diseases of wheat powder mildew, cucumber powder mildew, and cucumber downy mildew. The compound did not have systemic translocation among leaves of cucumber, but its duration was more than two weeks. ZJ1621 at 50-200 mg/L did not show any phytotoxic to crops tested.Several previous studies showed that some plant fungi could develop resistance readily to strobilurin fungicides. Thus, we investigated the resistance of B. graminis f.sp. tritici (Bgt) to the novel strobilurin fungicide ZJ0712 developed by NCRDP at Zhejiang Base in this study. Three fungicide ZJ0712-resistant Bgt mutants BgtOIR, Bgt1-1R and Bgt2-1R were obtained from the sensitive isolates Bgt01, Bgtl-1 and Bgt2-1, respectively, by fungicide method adaptation for ten generations. The resistance factors of all three mutants to ZJ0712 were greater than 80, and the resistance were stable through asexual reproduction. Inoculation tests showed that the virulence of the mutants was not significantly different from that of their parents. Comparisons of the nucleotide sequence of the partial
