Abstract

The special environment and humanistic history of Newfoundland conceived and created abundant folksongs that are popular with local people and sung gladly by them. Newfoundland has possessed a profound cultural connotation with more than five centuries’ history created by the European immigrants, and the resource of English and Irish folk songs are especially abundant. These folksongs are a beautiful part of the literature of Newfoundland, and they are abundant and colorful. They have been researched somewhat extensively in Newfoundland and Canada, but the research field on Newfoundland folk songs in China is still virgin soil; up to now, no article about Newfoundland folksongs have been published. In this dissertation, the writer is expected to make a tentative but innovative breakthrough in the research field of Newfoundland folksongs using translation, explanation and parallel comparison of the folksongs of Newfoundland.In this dissertation, the writer carries on a cross-cultural research on the folksongs between Newfoundland in Canada and some areas in China which have no connection. The writer will utilize the perspective of world literature and the method of comparison in order to probe the characteristic expression and ethical features of the folksongs of Newfoundland, and to look for equal dialogues and common rules of mankind’s folksongs.The methodology of this dissertation: in the introduction, the writer elaborates the scope, methods, reason, significance and materials on the study of the folksongs of Newfoundland in this article. In the main text, the writer chooses some representative folksongs from a few folksong anthologies of Newfoundland and classifies these selected folksongs into ocean songs, living songs, hometown songs, labor songs and ritual songs. Then the writer makes a parallel comparison between the folksongs of Newfoundland and some similar folksongs in several areas of China on the basis of translation and analysis of the folksongs of Newfoundland. In conclusion, the writer summarizes three common rules according to the above study: The folksong is the poetic expression of daily life; the folksong is also the public’s escape which breaks through modern science and technology; the folksong makes a connection and a return visit to humanity’s spiritual home.
