Abstract


Xianyou County, which is located in the east of Fujian Province and lying in the middle reaches of MuLan River, covers an area of 18151km^2, including 2.37 hectares of cultivated farmland and 15.53 hectares of forestland. It is a typical agricultural county especially for its advantages on the aspect of forestry, agriculture and so on, offering particularly favorable natural conditions to the cultivation of persimmon. In the year of 2001, Youyang Town began to introduce "Taiwan Motianling Persimmon"(referred to as Taiwan Persimmon) for its fine varieties and high-tech content.The purpose of this study is to supply scientific basis for decision making to persimmon industrial development according to the advantages and the existing problems of the development of persimmon industry in Xianyou County, also combined with the foreign advanced experience of persimmon industry.The Persimmon industry, which enjoys great market value and vast development prospect, has become an emerging industry in Fujian Province, and is also one of the pillar industries in the rural areas. Therefore, to promote the industrialization process of persimmon and the adjustment of persimmon industrial structure must have far-reaching influence on the development of the rural economy.There is no related literature on the persimmon industrial development in this area. However, with 10 years of cultivation and management of persimmon by local farmers, persimmon industry in Youyang Town is more comprehensive. Due to the lack of deep processing and by-product of persimmon, there is still a great promotional space for persimmon industrial development.This study is market-oriented, resource-based and scientific, the purpose of this paper is to improve the profit and quality of persimmon. This article is mainly based on the investigations from ShanYi and Motianling corporation, which are systematically elaborating the status of persimmon industry of its strengths and weakness. By combining sustainable development theory with the situation of local practice effort, the countermeasures of sustainable development of persimmon industry will be proposed to alleviate the poverty in the mountain area and protect the natural resources and the environment, most importantly, to better the industrial structure of economy in XianYou County. It is expected that this study could provide technical and policy support to healthy development of persimmon industry and its scale planting.
