Abstract

With the rapid development in optical fiber communication technique and optical fiber sensing technology, we urgently need a novel all-fiber phase modulator with high speed, broad bandwidth and low loss, in which the all-fiber phase modulator is the most important component. However, the phase modulators widely used like LiNbO3 crystal phase modulators and PZT phase modulators can not satisfy the above requirements completely. In order to develop a functional integrated all-fiber electric-optic modulator, we studied the characteristics of the poled twin-hole fiber, which are the foundation of manufacture of the poled fiber electro-optic divece. In this paper, investigation on the transmission characteristics and the electrical characteristics of the poled fiber with different parameters is carried out. Firstly, the equivalent refractive index mathematical model of the waveguide model of the poled fiber with two layers of metallic coating is given. Then, the relations between propagation losses and the states of polarizations, the geometric structures of the poled fiber are obtained by calculating the eigenvalue equations with numerical method. Moreover, the transmission characteristics of the poled fiber are simulated with BPM method. At last, the electrical model of the poled fiber is given and the relations between the distribution of electric field strength in the fiber, limit frequency and the geometric structures of the fiber is obtained by using Ansys. These relations make rich theory basis for the latter designation of the poled fiber modulator. The theory basis of all-fiber electro-optic modulators with high speed, broad bandwidth and low loss is provided. In short, a complete fiber electro-optic modulator has a huge application not only in optical fiber communication, but also in optical fiber sensing and fiber laser mode-locking and so on.
