Abstract


In recent years, foreign direct investment (FDI) of Chinese enterprises developed rapidly, direct investment to the European Union (EU) also presents an obvious rising trend. State-owned enterprises has already undertaken a number of direct investment activities following the direct investment theory from developing countries to developed countries .The choice of investing modes is the one of the options made earliest and most important in the course of the investment.From the 1980s, Chinese state-owned enterprises have started direct investment in the EU member states, and the modes of investment are similar in several industries, countries, and also nearly the same in certain investment strategy and stage. The main reasons of FDI can be divided into two categories for internal and external, the cause of investment, the strategies of enterprise developing, business conditions, investment experience of the host country, the level of economic development of the EU countries, and other factors.This paper will build binary logistic model by selecting five variables of corporate income growth, scale, technology demand intensity, the host country level of development, the investing experience in EU. As most enterprises investing in the EU have large-scale, its affect to this investment mode is not significant. And the higher of the corporation’s growth rate, the more likely to use the mode of greenfield. The stronger of the demand for technology, the more possibly take the way of merging. The richer experience of investment in EU the enterprises have, the more likely to choose to set up new enterprises for entering. The higher the level of economic development of the host country, the more likely enterprises tend to choose the transnational mergers and acquisitions.In future, there are several proposals for Chinese state-owned enterprises in the EU direct investment to consider: it is better to choose merging way if investing in the developed European Union members for seeking the original technology and management experience; market seeking enterprises should choose a greenfield way in new members; and the resources seeking enterprises should invest by mergers and acquisitions. We must also avoid the mistakes of forecast in target market and the weekness in the multinational management, and other issues.
